What We’ll Do

Outdoor Wilderness Survival in the Fall

Participants of this hands-on course will learn and practice the basics of surviving in the Northeastern Ontario’s wilderness. Priorities of survival will be discussed first, and then the participants will practice skills such as wilderness travel, fire making, obtaining water, making shelter and encountering wildlife. This is an essential course for anyone wishing to begin exploring the outdoors in the autumn.

Participants will need to dress for the weather, and pack their current survival kit.

Participants need to fill out a waiver form and a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire

Meet your host, Matt Watorek

Matt was born in Poland, where he developed a strong interest in the wilderness and outdoor survival skills. There, he learned about camping, hiking and fishing and was a junior provincial champion in orienteering. After arriving in Canada in 1988, Matt started to train in taekwondo, eventually earning a third degree black belt. He continued to camp, began canoe tripping, and obtained a degree in Physical and Health Education. While at the university, Matt became a lifeguard and a fitness instructor and coached various sports. Matt went on to became a teacher. While living in northern Ontario, Matt began hunting and trapping. Matt learned to shoot shotguns and rifles as well as recurve and compound bows. While teaching, he also became a first aid instructor. He changed careers after moving to Kirkland Lake, where he became an underground miner, and a mine rescuer. He took part in mine rescue competitions and became a district champion. Currently, Matt continues his mining career while offering Wilderness Survival Courses.
