About
About 101 Experiences
101 Experiences is an innovative and unique tourism initiative that brings people together through shared experiences.
The underlying goals that guide everything 101 Experiences does are:
- helping Northern Ontario’s economy through the development of sustainable tourism experiences;
- creating more welcoming and inclusive communities by sharing those experiences
Training Program
101 Experiences is non-profit, grant funded project that gives passionate locals training, skills and confidence to be able to turn their passions into a small business, essentially making those locals into micro-entrepreneurs.
101 Experiences are about creating connections within our communities. All experiences created through the 101 Experiences training program are guided experiences (hosted by a qualified person) that allow guests to learn from the host.
In order to help make more inclusive communities, 101 Experiences works diligently to help locals from all walks of life create experiences. We work francophone, newcomer, immigrant, and LGBTQ2S+ individuals to help them showcase their passions and culture in a Northern Ontario setting.
101 Experiences also acknowledges that the land in which we operate this initiative is treaty territory and the home of many First Nations peoples. 101 Experiences has and continues to work to create a program that embodies the teachings of the First Nations people of the area and of Turtle Island, works hard to educate all program participants on the First Nations of the area to ensure they are in turn teaching their guests about the First Nations of the area, and we are continuing to decolonize our training and offer training to First Nations people who want to teach people about their culture in a well-intentioned, transformative and educational way. All of our endeavors are guided by our Indigenous Advisory Council, made up of members of the First Nations of the Northeastern Ontario area and waterways.
The training program is an online 5-week program, that occurs for an hour and a half each week, with some extra time spent on written material, where one of the 101 Experiences trainers will guide participants in creating their experience from experience conception to the creation of the experience listing. Training can be done one on one with a trainer, or in a group with other participants (recommended). One of the most beneficial parts of the 5-week training is the Passion Fair: a pitching fair where participants pitch their experience to groups of potential tourists, municipal partners and community leaders and receive feedback and questions to help enhance their experience and give them confidence speaking about it.
Experience Promotion
Once participants have finished the 101 Experiences training program, they become hosts of their experiences. All experiences require liability insurance to be featured on our website.* 101 Experiences promotes and markets all experiences created through the training program, but does not control the booking or payments from these experiences. The hosts of the experiences are in charge of their businesses. The 101 Experiences website is a platform to showcase all the wonderful guided experiences created by passionate locals, and will lead you to their preferred booking platforms.
We encourage you to browse the website and read about the experiences and the hosts and check back seasonally, as we are always adding more experiences! If you are someone who lives in Northern Ontario and you’d like to learn more or create an experience, contact us to learn more!
Chi Miigwetch, Merci, Thank you!
